Students Learn from Book "Esperanza Rising"

Learning in Action! Fifth Grade students at Shelyn Elementary celebrated the completion of the novel, Esperanza Rising with a fiesta. Students took part in activities that related to the book, including rolling out their own flour tortillas, making guacamole and creating yarn dolls. Teachers across the District are implementing the new English Language Arts standards with literature and non-fiction texts and students are analyzing these texts in greater depth required by the Common Core.

“I enjoyed reading this book with my students because any human can relate to it. We all go through life with struggles, and this book teaches us how we can overcome and rise above our troubles,” said 5th Grade Shelyn Teacher Daryl Tamez. “The students loved also working with their hands and cooking – many for the first time.”
